Former heavyweight world champion and has a hard-knock life since defeating Muhammad Ali for the title of more than 30 years ago. His life must have been that hard for orphan girls who sang little on stage after Spinks was asleep snack bar.
I am sure the same will happen Saturday when the Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre production of “Annie” open in Livermore’s Bankhead theater.
So what causes this strange relationship between Spinks and “Annie,” the music?
Simple–Spinks won the title in Las Vegas on February 15, 1978. And because he was punching his way into the history, my wife and I are sitting in the theater in San Francisco watching Curran production road show “Annie,” which happened to feature Molly Ringwald as one of the orphans.
So we are watching the show and see little Annie dancing, singing and charm of the old depression to happiness in the way that reminds a bit of Shirley Temple in her Prime. We get all this warm, fuzzy vibes about depression, New Deal, and even the Secretary of State Harold Ickes.
